Since the beginning of the City League basketball season, the Bowsher Rebels were picked by the Blade poll to win the city title despite the fact that the Scott Bulldogs won the title last year. The Scott Bulldogs finished the regular season on top, the Rogers Rams second, and the Bowsher Rebels and the Woodward Polar Bears in the 3rd and 4th spots.
On Tuesday, February 16th, the top ranked Scott faced 4th ranked Woodward in a game the entire city felt the Bulldogs would win. Scott already beat Woodward in the two meeting they had in the regular season. This time, the Bulldogs fell to the Polar Bears with a final score of 53-50.
On the other side of the bracket, Rogers and Bowsher faced off. Despite Rogers beating Bowsher twice in the regular season, they fell short in the City League semi-final game.
Two of the most unexpected upset wins in City League history happened. Many people were expecting to see Rogers vs. Scott one more time. During the regular season, Rogers beat Scott in a BCSN instant classic as the game went into 2 overtimes. Then Scott pulled out a nice win over Rogers in their second meeting at the Ben E. Williams field house, home of the Bulldogs.
Even though the two teams, Woodward and Bowsher, were both underdog teams, they pulled out semi-final wins and will go head-to-head tonight, February 18th, in the City League Championship game. Who knows who will come out on top, but it’ll be a good game to watch.
